70% of emails you receive have trackers in them.
On Tuesday, July 20, DuckDuckGo announces its newest private Email Protection feature. Compared to other email apps, the said feature will have an anti-tracker system. This will avoid your information to become available from third-party advertisers. Even hackers too. Here’s how and where you can download the new feature.
DuckDuckGo email feature
It is important to take note that DuckDuckGo’s new feature is not a new emailing service. According to its official press release, the so-called Email Protection feature is a beta update that anyone can easily download on phones.
Here’s why the new feature is a must-have for you:
If you’re familiar with Google’s @gmail.com, the anti-tracker search engine also has a similar thing. In DuckDuckGo’s new Email Protection feature, your email will be instantly identified with its @duck.com. As explained on the website, their system will automatically remove everything that could track your device.
According to their research, about 70% of all emails sent to Google or Yahoo have trackers inside them. This mainly allows companies to know what you’re up to, what you like, or what you dislike. For example, if you open an email that has a specific product in it; the next thing that’ll pop on your screen is related to that product.
That’s how trackers use emails, based on DuckDuckGo. Though advertisements are not really a big deal, in terms of security. DuckDuckGo aims to prevent more serious scenarios with their feature. One huge example is hackers getting personal information.
Easy access for other apps
Not everyone uses DuckDuckGo. As of now, the main search engine used by people is Google Chrome. Interestingly, in DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection feature, you no longer need to remove apps from your tabs.
The Email Protection feature will function even the user switch to different emailing services like Google or Yahoo. Just in case, you went to a suspicious website, DuckDuckGo claims to automatically avoid users from logging into their email accounts.
The search engine will also produce new Private Duck Addresses, in case you need one.
DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection feature doesn’t save your emails
According to its website, DuckDuckGo believes emails are private properties of a user. Thus, the reason why they claimed that no email copies are saved from their system. This means, no matter where you go or what you received, DuckDuckGo will reportedly avoid not saving them.
It was not clear on the report whether Google or Yahoo Mail save on theirs.
How to download?
Sad to say, DuckDuckGo’s Email Protection service is not yet available to the public. The good news though is that they are now giving it a test in its Beta mode.
If you want to test the service out, users are advised to join the feature’s ‘private waitlist.’ Here’s the step-by-step on how you can download the new feature:
- Download DuckDuckGo for iOS or Android
- Open Settings > Beta Features > Email Protection
