WhatsApp announced today some exciting news for both iOS and Android users, in their appearance at Samsung’s Unpacked event. This app may soon allow users to transfer its WhatsApp chat history between iOS and Android devices. Read on to know more about this possible added feature.
iOS and Android users indeed share differences with their devices from features, apps, functionality, and others. People that are used to iOS or vice versa may have struggles in using the other given this gap. Moreover, saved data such as passwords, media files, and chat history is quite massive. This means that changing from one device to another is considered a hassle. Good thing that WhatsApp is solving their part of that issue through this possible feature to be available soon.
WhatsApp easily allows you to transfer messages between iPhones or between Android devices only.
As of today, WhatsApp, a Facebook owned company is allowing its users to transfer messages only between iOS or between Android. In cases of users changing or upgrading their device, messages and conversation can easily be continued. But not between iOS and Android. This limits users that want to switch from iOS to Android, or vice versa. Also resulting in losing the entire content of their WhatsApp conversations.
What’s New With WhatsApp?
As first reported by Engadget, this transfer feature will initially be available to Samsung phones. Users can now import and export their WhatsApp chat history between Android devices and iOS, and vice versa. Since this will be available first with Samsung devices with Android 10 or newer. Users get to transfer their messages to an iOS device.
The company explains that it will soon be available on iOS, for those who are planning to switch between iOS to Android. Moreover, this transfer includes all messages together with photos and voice memos.
9to5Google added that signs of this Import/Export feature are seen as Android’s “Data Restore Tool”. With that, it is more likely to be seen in Settings > Chats > Move Chats to Android.
Why Only Now?
The company explained that this feature was only available now given that it is quite difficult to implement. Given that the chat history and messages are “end-to-end encrypted and stored on-device”, it means that importing it will be “additional work”.
This effort involves several parties including WhatsApp, OS developers, and phone makers to make sure that transfer will be safe and secure. But thankfully, a collaboration has finally resulted in this feature. This will surely add ease to users considering switching from iOS to Android for experience and preference. Reports also state that WhatsApp announced this new feature exactly at a Samsung event as a way for the phone company to lure iOS users into making the switch. This will definitely add more reasons for iOS users to try Android.
No exact date was given yet as to when it will be available but the company says that it will be here in the “coming weeks”.
