No need to bring your physical ID outside!
If you have been bringing your physical ID whenever you go, Apple has a better solution for you. Instead of losing it every time and not knowing where you put it, Apple Wallet can be your instant digital ID. In its latest announcement, the tech giant announced the US states that allowed the said Wallet ID. Here’s how you can do it if you’re based on any of these states.
Apple Wallet as an ID?
Apple has recently introduced Apple Wallet’s function to become your digital identification card holder. According to its website, several US states have already approved usage of the said digital ID. Such states include Arizona and Georgia. Meanwhile, states like Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah are reportedly the next ones to follow.
As claimed, Arizona and Georgia would be the first states in the country to adapt the said system. All identifications needed by an individual can be saved on Apple Wallet. This includes a driver’s license or even your state ID.
According to Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, the approval for the digital ID access “is an important step in our [Apple] vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet.”
She said that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the mentioned states has already approved the digital ID. That means if you are traveling from Arizona through an airport, the easiest way to bring your ID is via Apple Wallet.
“We are excited that the TSA and so many states are already on board to help bring this to life for travelers across the country using only their iPhone and Apple Watch, and we are already in discussions with many more states as we’re working to offer this nationwide in the future,” Bailey concluded.
TSA commended Apple
David Pekoske, TSA Administrator, gets featured in the Apple press release. He described the Apple Wallet ID as “new and innovative” way to keep identifications intact. He said that the initiative marks a “major milestone,” not just Apple but especially for TSA.
Pekoske noted that he hoped to see more passengers use Apple Wallet in order to save them from waiting in long lines.
How to use it?
It’s intriguing how to use Apple Wallet as your digital ID card. If you want to understand how it works, here’s a quick rundown of all the things you need to know about it:
- Go to your Apple Wallet and click the + button to add an ID
- Once done, users have to scan their physical ID and save a copy on the device
- The prompt will tell you to take a selfie for verification
- Once verified by the issuing state, you can now use the digital ID from iPhone or even Apple Watch
How to use in TSA checking?
Once you’re inside a TSA checking area, the officer will be asking you for verification. At this time, you are now allowed to use Apple Wallet. Just tap your Apple device and the TSA officer will immediately see your ID on his screen.
To protect other personal data, users are allowed to limit the info included on their ID. An authorization request will be sent to the user to check which ID will be needed for verification. Once done, you’re good to go.
