Oppo is still ranked no. 4.
One of the biggest Chinese smartphone makers in the world, Oppo, is now announcing retrenchment methods amid COVID-19 pandemic. About 20 percent of its employees are expected to be laid off in an unknown period. Bloomberg released this report, but Oppo has not yet commented whether these claims were true.
Oppo loses battle against Apple
In an article of Bloomberg on Wednesday, Sept. 15 entitled, ‘Chinese Smartphone Giant Cuts Jobs After Going Up Against Apple,’ Oppo reportedly loses its battle to get the American market against Apple.
As said on the report, several unnamed employees from Oppo reportedly told the publication about the upcoming lay offs. According to its official page, the Chinese smartphone maker company has more than 40,000 employees. Once the rumors are true, about 8,000 employees from the company are expected to lose their jobs soon.
In all fairness, Oppo has not yet confirm nor deny the said allegations. However, Bloomberg’s assets in the company confirmed that the cuts will be coming from the key software and device teams departments.
Aside from those employees, other Oppo staff that will reportedly be included in the lay offs are from other teams in the company.
“The cuts affect important units including a team that customizes Android into its inhouse ColorOS, and an Internet of Things division that develops a spectrum of wearables such as smartwatches and earbuds, said the people, asking not to be identified discussing a private matter,” written on Bloomberg.
Oppo and OnePlus partnership
According to the report, Oppo decided to cut down the number of employees after its partnership with another Chinese smartphone brand, OnePlus.
Since mid-2021, both companies shared their devices with new releases. One factor that made Oppo chose OnePlus is its massive market in Americans. However, due to the merge of both companies, the lay offs started to happen.
As explained, some of the current employees that Oppo has, are already found in the OnePlus team. Thus, forcing the former company to conduct crucial lay offs to its staff.
Oppo status in the market
As mentioned, Oppo is one of the most popular Chinese smartphone brands in the world. However, due to the pandemic, delays in production etc, the company slowly started to see the bottom food chain.
Though its status as a company overall is better than expected, the company still faces massive financial issues in the past months.
Oppo’s first Kodak phone
With the losses happened in Oppo, it is expected that when chances are given, the company will definitely released models that must be unique and surprising.
According to latest reports, the Chinese company will soon launch the very first Kodak phone in the history.
GSMarena said that Oppo and Kodak will partner on the new model. Though it is not yet confirmed, the said phone has a dual 50MP cameras.
