Security experts are now urging consumers to remove all their banking details from their Apple Pay account. Here’s what makes this new flaw dangerous.
Apple Pay is currently important since it allows consumers to make contactless transactions when they are purchasing food and other products outside the public. Because of this cybersecurity researchers are now warning iPhone users to remove their credit or debit card details from the app.
Tech experts have urged iPhone users who have Visa cards stored in their phones to delete all details, as a glitch means fraudsters could make illegal transactions using the Apple Pay function.iPhones have an Express Transit mode, which allows its users to tap in and out of transport services using contactless payments without having to confirm their identities using Face ID, and this could be exploited by ruthless scammers.
Researchers from the University of Surrey and the University of Birmingham have urged anyone with Visa card details in their Wallet app or on Apple Pay to remove them as soon as possible. Due to the ease of the Express Transit function, it could mean unlimited contactless payments could be made by criminals from an iPhone still inside its owner’s handbag or pocket.
iPhone Users Need To Remove Their Banking Details
The experts at the top universities proved that it was possible for fraudsters to trick iPhones into believing it was in contact with a transit gate through only using a common card payment reader used in most shops paired with cheap radio equipment. Involved experts explained that typical fraud detection checks failed to block payments of Apple Pay from going through.
It is only Visa cards on iPhones that seem to be affected by the technical glitch and is not thought to affect other combinations such as Visa on Samsung Pay, or even Mastercard on iPhones. Co-author of the shocking study, Dr. Tom Chothia of the University of Birmingham said that “iPhone owners should check if they have a Visa card set up for transit payments and if so they should disable it.
He added that “there is no need for Apple Pay users to be in danger, but until Apple or Visa fix this they are. The tech experts behind the study stated that whilst they had shared their findings with both the giant iPhone maker and Visa, the companies are in disagreement over who should take urgent action to fix the issue.”
