Apple has released one of the few outstanding iOS 15 features that were first shown off at WWDC. In an initial rollout of six hotels, Apple users will be able to use their iPhone or Apple Watch as their room key, thanks to a partnership with Hyatt Hotels.
World of Hyatt guests at participating locations can now unlock guestrooms and key card-protected common areas like gyms, pools, and elevators without having to open an app or handle a traditional plastic room key.
This is a significant milestone for Hyatt as it continues to reimagine the guest experience through digital innovations, giving guests more control and flexibility throughout their stay.
“Like everything we do at Hyatt, our approach to technology always includes listening to our guests and members. We heard that they want access to be near-instantaneous. Room keys in Apple Wallet is an easy, convenient and secure room key option for our guests when they travel.”
“We are proud to work with Apple to launch this game-changing digital experience. Many consumer technologies evolve through a ‘tipping point’ that drives a change in adoption. We believe our collaboration with Apple on this new approach to room keys in Apple Wallet can be exactly that.”— Julia Vander Ploeg, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Digital and Technology, Hyatt
How Does It Work?
Hyatt room keys in Apple Wallet help provide a simple and contactless check-in and check-out experience for guests, as well as additional security and privacy benefits.
Check-In and Set-Up are a breeze
After completing a reservation, members can add their room key to Apple Wallet via the World of Hyatt app. The room key in Apple Wallet will be updated once they’ve been added, letting them know when it’s time to check-in.
When a guest is checked in and the room is ready, the room key in Apple Wallet is activated, recording the guest’s room number and making it available for use right away. The room key will not work until the guest has checked into the hotel and been assigned a room.
Experience that is safe, simple, and contactless
If a World of Hyatt guest needs to change rooms, extend their stay, or access late checkout, the hotel can update the guest’s room key in Apple Wallet without them having to visit the front desk.
Guests can use the World of Hyatt app to check out when it’s time. The guest’s Apple Wallet room key will then be deactivated and archived.
To unlock, simply tap the iPhone or Apple Watch
With a simple tap of their iPhone running iOS 15 or Apple Watch running watchOS 8, World of Hyatt guests can gain easy and secure access to their room and common areas throughout the hotel, including the gym, spa, pool, and more.
Guests can access key card-protected areas by holding their device near the door’s NFC-enabled lock once a room key is added to Apple Wallet on iPhone or Apple Watch. Guests can use their room key in Apple Wallet without unlocking their device when using Express Mode.
If their iPhone needs to be charged, they can use Power Reserve to unlock their room or common areas for up to five hours.
More private and secure
Room keys are stored in Apple Wallet on your device, taking advantage of the privacy and security features built into iPhone and Apple Watch.
When a World of Hyatt guest uses an Apple Wallet room key, it is never shared with Apple or stored on Apple servers. If an iPhone or Apple Watch is misplaced, the guest can use the Find My app to lock it and track it down.
