Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 Series this year, but there are numerous speculations circulating. According to the most recent information, the upcoming series may become much pricier, and the display design has also been revealed.

There was a lot of talk before the iPhone 13 that Apple would finally get rid of the notch. Since the iPhone X, the sensor enclosure with the front camera and Face ID sensor has been around. Since then, nearly every other major phone manufacturer has embraced the hole-punch design.

Apple, on the other hand, stuck to its guns even as the rest of the industry moved on. The notch on the iPhone 13 models are smaller, but it is still noticeable. However, new rumours say that Apple is delivering a totally new design to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in 2022, which could mark the end of the notch.

One-of-a-kind display

Originally, reports suggested a hole-punch display, similar to what we’ve seen in previous years from Android suppliers. Apple would have presumably found a way to hide the Face ID components beneath the screen, with the selfie camera visible through the cutout.

Then, in September of last year, Twitter user ShrimpApplePro posted an odd image of an iPhone display with two cutouts. The first was spherical, while the second was pill-shaped. The Face ID mechanism would be in the pill, and the camera would be inside the circular cutout. We didn’t think much of the leak at the time, but a reputable source confirmed the photo’s authenticity this week.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will sport the “hole + pill” design from the leaked photo, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young:

The twin opening design, like the notch, would be “unique to Apple,” Young said, adding that the future iPhone models will not resemble devices from Huawei, which have pill-shaped cutouts in the front display.

Young later clarified that the hole will most likely be for the dot projector in a follow-up tweet. Meanwhile, the selfie and infrared cameras will be built into the pill. It was thought that Apple will be able to conceal at least part of the sensors beneath the display. Although it is still early, rumors are circulating that this will be the new style for at least a generation.

For future Apple products, Young has shown to be a dependable source of display-related knowledge. For example, he correctly predicted that the new iPad mini will have an 8.3-inch display and no home button last year. He was also the first to disclose that ProMotion displays would be included in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

The future of the notch explained

At first view, the notch’s evolution may not appear to be significant. There is now a strange sliver of screen between the two cutouts, despite the fact that more of the display is viewable. The good news is that, as Max Weinbach points out, an OLED panel makes this problem simple to solve:
