Snapchat’s busy week of new feature announcements continues, this time focusing on Apple’s Find My network.
Snap has unveiled a new real-time location sharing feature and describes it as a “buddy system” in the making. This is a follow-up to Snapchat’s hugely popular Snap Map feature, which debuted in 2017.
Snapchat’s new Live Location feature allows you to share your precise location with “trusted friends and family,” according to the company.
Previously, the Snap Map feature only displayed an approximate location and only updated when the Snapchat user opened the app, not in the background.
Snapchat has implemented a number of different safeguards to prevent stalking and harassment in order to address potential privacy concerns.
First and foremost, the Live Location feature is not intended to be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Instead, you can share your live location with trusted contacts for as little as 15 minutes or as long as 8 hours, according to the company.
Furthermore, the feature is turned off by default, and users can pause location sharing without notifying the other person. Additionally, there is no way to share your Live Location with all of your Snapchat friends.
It must be enabled on a friend-by-friend basis instead. The company emphasizes that you should only use the feature with “trusted friends and family.”
Snapchat is positioning this as a sort of “buddy system” feature. When you’re on your way home from a night out, for example, you can share your location with a trusted friend. While you’re driving home, your friend can keep an eye on your location in the Snapchat app, and then you can turn off Live Location sharing entirely.
Go to a friend’s profile in the Snapchat app to find the new Live Location option. This is where you can allow that friend to share your location with them. Simply make sure you’re using the most recent Snapchat app from the App Store.
This is a noteworthy new Snapchat feature, even if it is somewhat limited in scope due to privacy concerns and protections. More than 250 million Snapchat users use the company’s existing Snap Map feature each month, so it’s interesting to see the company expanding on its location feature.
Apple also maintains its extensive Find My network, which allows for real-time live location sharing among friends and family members.
How to share a live location with family and friends
It’s simple to share a live location with your Snapchat friends. To enable the new update on your app, follow this step-by-step guide.
- Open the profile of the friend with whom you want to share your current location.
- You will see the profile of your friend. The option to ‘Share my Live Location’ can now be found by scrolling down.
- When you select the option, a pop-up window will appear, informing you of the new Live Location feature.
- You can proceed with the feature by tapping on ‘Sounds Good.’
As previously stated, the feature only works between friends on an individual basis, you will not be able to share your current location with more than one friend at a time.
