We have heard a lot about what the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will look like later this year. Now, based on leaked CAD design files, a news outlet has published what it claims are the first renders of the iPhone 14 Pro.
Unsurprising design change
Case makers frequently use renders, CAD drawings, and ‘dummy’ models to prepare their accessories for upcoming iPhone launches. They frequently leak from somewhere in Apple’s supply chain, and leaks are becoming more common as the new iPhone’s release date approaches in the fall.
The renders are said to be based on leaked CAD drawings from “industry sources,” and they show an iPhone 14 Pro that resembles the iPhone 13 Pro in appearance. On the back, there’s a large camera bump and volume buttons, as well as a volume switch next to the SIM card slot.
The notch will be removed from the high-end iPhone 14 models for the first time since the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017. While the display won’t be completely free of intrusions, as some customers may wish, it will have a pill-shaped and circular cutout at the top that takes up less space than a notch.
The removal of the notch on the front of the iPhone 14 Pro design is, of course, the most significant change. Apple is replacing the notch with a new pill + hole punch design that effectively eliminates the dead space that currently exists within the notch. Like the iPhone 13, the speaker grille is also integrated into the top bezel.
The changes in these renders aren’t nearly as dramatic as some previous iPhone 14 renders have suggested. The iPhone 14 would have a design similar to the iPhone 4, with rounded volume buttons and no camera bump, according to Jon Prosser.
One thing to keep in mind is that because case makers use these types of CAD files, the designs may be inaccurate for design details that don’t affect case fit. Apple, for example, is rumored to be removing the SIM card slot this year.
The presence or absence of a SIM card slot on the iPhone 14 Pro has no bearing on case makers, so we shouldn’t read too much into the fact that these renders show one.
On the other hand, because the notch changes have an impact on accessory manufacturers (particularly screen protector manufacturers), such details are assumed to be correct.
Furthermore, the iPhone 14 could use the same A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13. Apple is expected to improve the cameras on this year’s new iPhone, as it does every year, so it’ll be interesting to see what Apple plans to change with the iPhone 14 compared to the current base model iPhones.
