The Galaxy S22 series came with a slew of new camera features, including improved night shots and new video call effects thanks to Samsung’s “Nightography” software wizardry. Some of these improvements are now available on older devices from the South Korean giant.
Enhanced night portraits

With Samsung’s May software release, the Galaxy S22 series will be able to shoot night photography in Portrait Mode with the telephoto camera, and this feature will be added to flagships dating back to 2020. The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the models.
Auto-framing function

Samsung’s auto-framing does exactly that: it zooms in and out and pans around to keep people in the frame. It can accommodate up to 10 people standing up to 5 meters away from the device.
It’s already available on the Galaxy S22 series, but it’ll soon be available on the Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy S21 FE, as well as improvements for Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Flip 3, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and Galaxy Z Flip owners.
Better video call effects

Samsung owners can use custom backgrounds and mic controls in video calling apps with this feature. Google Meet and Duo, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Zoom, and Messenger are among the supported apps.
Support will be coming soon for the Galaxy S20 and S21 families, as well as their respective FE variants, as well as the Galaxy Note 20 series, all Galaxy Z Flip models, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Fold 3.
Samsung has also stated that the feature will be available on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 by the end of June. The Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite models are also available.
Optimized App Store Camera app quality
The Galaxy S22 series includes “image quality optimization technology” that improves the quality of photos taken with social media and third-party camera apps. In other words, the quality difference between photos taken with the Samsung Camera app and those taken with Snapchat or Instagram should be minimal.
The Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will all get this optimization technology soon. Older devices, such as the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20, will not be supported.
More Galaxy Z Fold 3 camera feature improvements
Last but not least, Samsung’s camera improvements include some tweaks made specifically for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Expert RAW app will be supported by the foldable once the May software update is released. The Fold 3’s telephoto camera will also have access to the Pro camera mode, giving users more options.
Samsung hasn’t provided an exact timeline for the release of these features, but it has confirmed that the update will be available first for Galaxy S21 models before being rolled out to the rest of the lineup by the end of May. As previously stated, select features for the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 should be available by the end of June.
Samsung will begin rolling out the software in its home market of South Korea before making it available worldwide.
