The utility of rewards programs varies, and some aren’t worth using at all. Google Play Points has some hidden functionality that can go unnoticed unless you look for it.
This tutorial will show you how to use Google Play Points to purchase and redeem apps and perks.
Earn Google Play Points
It’s simple to earn Google Play Points. As it turns out, every time you buy something from the Google Play Store, you get a certain number of points.
The number of points you earn from a purchase is directly proportional to the amount you spend and your Google Play Points level. At the lowest tier, Bronze, for example, every dollar you spend earns you one point.
This also holds true for subscriptions. If you’re a Google One member, for example, you can earn points on the monthly purchases you make.
Assume you’ve signed up for Google One’s 100GB plan. For every $1.99 you spend on the subscription, you’ll earn two points. This applies to subscriptions purchased through Google Play as well.
When you automatically renew your monthly app fees, they will be assigned a point value. As long as the subscription is purchased through Google Play’s checkout, this is the case.
Level up
You can advance in tier as you earn more points. The higher your tier, the more points you’ll earn for each purchase. Unfortunately, moving up a tier is difficult unless you spend a lot of money on apps, games, movies, and other similar items.
Even if you do get promoted, the benefits are minor and have little impact on your earnings. Only 1.4 points are earned for every dollar spent at the highest tier, Platinum. However, there are some rare instances in which higher tiers pay off.

Level | Points required | Earning rate per dollar |
---|---|---|
Bronze | 0 – 149 | 1 point |
Silver | 150 – 599 | 1.1 points |
Gold | 600 – 2,999 | 1.2 points |
Platinum | 3,000 and up | 1.4 points |
Do points expire?
Google Play Points have an expiration date. After you earn points, your total is given a new expiration date. If you wait a certain amount of time before using your points, they are no longer valid.
Of course, as long as you continue to earn points, the expiration date appears to be getting longer and longer. The Google Play Store hosts a weekly giveaway in which you can easily earn points. This will ensure that your points do not expire.
Using and/ or redeeming
It’s fairly simple to use or redeem Google Play Points. In fact, there are several options available. One method is currently available, while the other is expected to be available soon.
Redeeming points
Points can be claimed in a variety of ways on the Google Play Store. You can either claim Google Play Credits, which are essentially a virtual gift card, or you can claim Google Play Cash. You must use 100 points for every dollar you claim.
You can also use your points to claim certain items in-game if you don’t want to do that. When you use points to claim an item, it will be added to your game account, and you will see the item you purchased the next time you play.

How to claim credit or items:
- Navigate to the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- In the upper-right corner, tap your profile picture.
- There will be a small section labeled Play Points. Tap it.
- Tip: You can view your Play Points balance by clicking here.
- Under your level, tap Use.
- To claim something, simply make sure you have the necessary points and tap it.
- Please keep in mind that the price will be fully visible if you have enough for the item or credit. Otherwise, it will be mostly opaque.
- Select Use points.
Alternatively, you can donate to charity directly from Google Play using your points. Simply scroll to the top of the page and click the Donations button. The page will only show charities to which you can donate after you tap it. These have a higher value, so your points per dollar go further.
Points redemption at the time of purchase
In the near future, a new way to redeem points will be available. Instead of having to claim and use points separately in the Google Play Store, users will be able to use them directly from the app checkout. For instance, if you’re playing a game and want to purchase a bonus item, you can do so normally.
When you get to the checkout page, click Use points to redeem any Google Play Points you already have. There’s no need to exit the app. When you buy an app for the first time from the Play Store, you can also use Play Points.
This new feature will be available “in the coming weeks,” so if Play Points are already available where you are, you should see it soon.
Google Play Points can be useful in some situations, regardless of how you earn or claim them. The best way to use them, in our opinion, is to save them for as long as possible and then redeem them for cool discounted items or apps. While Google Play Points aren’t exactly free money, they are a lot better than paying full price for apps and games.
