Classic PlayStation games to return?
SaGa Frontier Remastered by Square Enix was published on consoles and computers a little over a year ago, and it now seems like a sequel is not too far off. A listing for what appears to be a PS4 and Nintendo Switch port of the classic PlayStation RPG SaGa Frontier 2 has been added to the store of well-known import retailer Play-Asia. The website states that on August 25 of this year, the ’90s sequel will debut on the aforementioned platforms.
According to the text on the store listing, “SaGa Frontier 2 introduces a comprehensive overhaul of the RPG genre.” Traditional computer polygonal fixtures are swapped out with beautiful, hand-painted watercolor graphics that are accompanied by an incredible musical score. This game uses the Multi-Scenario System to combine freedom and linearity, offering players unmatched freedom in selecting which scenario they want to play while other scenarios interact with one another.
Additionally, Saga Frontier 2 introduces Duel, Team, and Strategic, three cutting-edge fighting modes. Players have the option to command a single character, a squad, or multiple units simultaneously during fights, depending on the scenarios they have chosen.
A Japanese PlayStation console version of Saga Frontier 2 was released in 1999, while an English version was released in the west in January 2000. The hand-painted watercolor backgrounds in Saga Frontier 2 give it a distinct storybook feel akin to reading Winnie the Pooh, which made the game famous at the time. Following in the footsteps of the original SaGa game, Saga Frontier 2 offers non-linear gameplay that lets players pursue various branching pathways to finish the game.
The fictitious Sandail universe of Square Enix’s SaGa Frontier 2 maintained the first game’s penchant for medieval combat with a German and Anglo-Saxon style. A player-selected lengthy dual storyline, in which the destinies of two young men: William Knights (a man looking into the deaths of his parents) and Gustave XIII (an exiled heir striving to regain what is rightfully his) eventually cross paths to form a larger narrative arc, was present in the sequel. SaGa Frontier 2 garnered favorable reviews from both players and critics since it exhibited Square Enix’s customary propensity for opulent graphics, compelling plot, and evocative music.
SaGa Frontier 2 has not yet received a remaster, remake, or even a simple rerelease from Square Enix, therefore the Play-Asia listing should be treated with caution for the time being. It goes without saying that the first SaGa Frontier was just remastered for the same platforms, thus the sequel following suit is practically a guarantee at this point. Specifically speaking the fact that Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song will be given a remaster this Winter for PS4, PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, it is only sensible for SaGa Frontier 2 to have a remaster earlier.
