PlayStation is sort of making a comeback in the handheld gaming market. Backbone One – PlayStation Edition was introduced today along with the announcement of PlayStation and Backbone’s relationship.
Players can use this gadget as a mobile gaming controller using the PS Remote Play software on their iOS phones.
The PlayStation Edition’s transparent d-pad and face buttons and white and gray color scheme make it more resemble a DualSense than a conventional Backbone One mobile controller, even though it has all the same features. The haptic feedback and adaptive trigger characteristics of the DualSense are absent from the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition, according to Backbone, which founder and CEO Maneet Khaira explained didn’t make ergonomic sense on a mobile controller:
They know that players expect a particular level of immersion while playing in a handheld size factor, so ergonomics and weight are always top of mind. Therefore, during the process of coming up with this design, they conducted in-depth ergonomic analyses and consulted with a number of usability and human factors specialists. Instead of trying to replicate the DualSense’s characteristics, they wanted to design a mobile gaming platform that would fit in in with the PS5 lineup.
The PlayStation Pulse 3D headset may now be used with ease for mobile gaming, even though the connection between the controller and the PlayStation 5 controller is simply ornamental.
Although most of the controller’s features are just for aesthetic purposes, it has been released at the same time as certain significant changes to iOS apps. Users can now start their PS4 or PS5 directly from the PS Remote Play app on iOS and navigate the Backbone app using touch controls. The Backbone app now has even more interaction with PlayStation; it will display a specific selection of PlayStation-related games and updates and direct users to the right download pages for those titles for their system. The PS Remote Play software and PlayStation Backbone One can then be used to play these games remotely.
Even while it isn’t precisely a new PlayStation Vita, it is a PlayStation-approved controller that enables handheld play of PS4 and PS5 titles. The Backbone One – PlayStation Edition is a mobile controller with a DualSense motif that is currently only available for iOS. An Android version will be released later this year.
